Dumbarse with a gun.

Howdy all,

Today I'm going to show you the second, and final, RT Troll conversion that I made. But before I begin I thought I'd talk a little bit about the reasons for selecting these two particular Trolls to convert up.

Firstly, I had to decide which range to select the minis from. I chose the Marauder range as I reckon they're probably some of the best Trolls that GW have ever produced. And seeing as they're from the same era as RT I thought they'd fit right in with the aesthetic as well. Also, I'd never owned any of these minis before, so it was a bloody good excuse. grab a couple :)

How I went about choosing the ones from that range was pretty straight forward. I just looked at the one's that could be made to look like they were holding a firearm in either hand. The top two on the right were an easy choice really. Honestly, I wanted the dude on the bottom right, but I couldn't nab one at a reasonable price. Looking back now I didn't need to be so fussy as I could have made any one of them work.

There's so much RT potential left in these minis.....I better not :)

So, here's the next candidate,

He looked like he could hold a large cannon in his hand.

After removing his club I started to play around with weapons.

I initially made this skirt/kilt thing for him.

But decided that it looked a bit naff.

2nd attempt saw me reuse the skirt as a shoulder pad.

And gave him some pants instead.

Gave him an ammo belt.

And a few trophies that only a Troll could appreciate.

And then I gave him some some colour:

Keeping guard on the beach. There's a rip out there apparently.

Added the ubiquitous RT scribble to his weapon.

Bloodied up his jewelry a bit.

Nothing in particular to see in this shot.

Added some scratches top his hand cannon.

And a whole lot of weathering too.

In practical terms this guy has about enough ammo to get one good zing out of it before he's spent. If I was to give him enough ammo to be able to realistically use the weapon to its full potential then the whole bloody base would be covered in it. But this is a pretend game, reality can go jump.

In game terms these guys are about as useful as tits on a bull. Couple BS 2 with stupidity and you get a whole lot of wandering around the battlefield, if they decide too, and missing everything they shoot at. The first thing that comes to mind whenever I see a Troll in a game......

But they are fun to have on the tabletop nonetheless. Big monsters with guns rock....period!

Ok, enough waffle from me. Have a grand old time with your lead toys guys.

Cheers :)

  1. Trousers on a troll? Why you gotta further outdated puritanical beliefs? čśé

    1. Hi Andrew,

Should have given him a g-string instead :)

      Glad you like him mate.

  2. Haha, it really turned out great. The wiring, the ammo, everything. Dumb, ok, but charming.

    1. I'm pretty comfortable with my rusting technique now. Plenty of trial & error, mostly error, has finally paid off. I'm happy with how it looks too. Thanks Anthony :)

  4. Very nice work there. It's one of those conversions where everything seems to make perfect sense! The paintscheme brings it together very well. I get the feeling that 40k battles would involve about 2 seconds of shooting before everyone ran out of ammo and had to hit each other. Maybe that's why the sides are always so close on the box art!

    1. I always thought it was more like a Rambo movie, ala never ever run out of ammo. Using pistols in hand 2 hand is another 80's movie trope.

Either way, no matter how much ammo this dude had he's more likely to be more effective drooling at the enemy that hitting them with bullets.

Glad you like him Toby :)

  5. Spot on! That guy looks as stoopid as he looks goofy - both highly rated troll traits. The hand holding the ammo belt is very natural - looks like it was always designed to be that way!

    1. I'm really pleased with how he turned out. Actually, after converting these two it's made me a little sad that NGW never made any RT Trolls back in the day. Maybe they got a little shy about trying to sculpt anymore weird minis after the RT Minotaur failed? Dunno.

Anyway, I'm glad I've got a couple of feeble minded, gun toting loonies to lay down on the pretend battlefield. Might bring them along to BOYLnext year.

      Cheers Jon :)

  6. Great conversion. I only just noticed now that the cable to his gun replaced the ponytail. I think pants was also a much better choice than the skirt.

    1. I was in two minds about his ponytail. I knew I wanted to remove it, but I wasn't sure what I was going to replace it with. The cables to his brain seemed like a likely way for him to operate his weapon. So many were required due to the size of his feeble brain.

Yeah, pants for the win. The skirt was a silly idea.

Glad you like him Sean, cheers :)

  7. I shit myself when I saw the first gun picture. I thought he lost an arm and you had to do emergency surgery.

It's a beautiful troll, I love the bits on the back, amazing even if it's so dumb, for real.

    1. Well, your not far wrong there Mr Bacon. I was trying to repose his arm and it snapped off. I was contemplating pinning it back on, but I knew it would never be as strong as before so I decided to go another way.

As dumb as a box of hammers, but looks great......standing there drooling while he contemplates the goings on of the pretend battlefield.

      Cheers mate :)

  8. Now that's a fun model. I imagine bullets flying in completely random directions all over the beach.
