RoC warband: Psyker lvl 2

Alright, I'm at the end of my warband creation now. If you haven't been following along and you're interested to see how the rest of the gang was created then you can check them out here, here, here and here.

Here is the last addition to my Renegade warband:

Name: Gary
Psyker lvl 2, Psi pts 27, 3 x lvl 1 spells, 2 x lvl 2 spells.
Personal attribute: Transparent skin. Fear pts 3
Equipment: Mesh armour, boltgun, las pistol, stumm grenades, bionic eye with targeter, bio & energy scanner.

I based this guy off of an unreleased RT mini, Captain Repentance. He's now available from Foundry Miniatures, which is where I procured him from last time I was at BOYL. I thought he looked a bit like a psyker because of his cape and other stylish clothing. The only thing that didn't fit the psyker persona for me was the helmet.

So I lopped it off and replaced it with a goblin head from Reaper Miniatures because I felt like it. Actually, I used that head for a couple of reasons. The first being that I wanted to use an abnormally proportioned head, and secondly, I had nothing else at hand. Also, I think it looks pretty funky.

I'd ran out of Boltguns so I made one one out of bits. Looks a bit different than the standard one, but still recognisable so I'm pretty happy with it. For the bionic eye with a targeter, bio & energy scanner I decided to combine them into one unit, mounted/grafted onto the side of his head. This was cut from a SM helmet. Then after a bit of putty work he was ready for paint.

And here is the colour scheme I chose for him:

Because he has flayed skin I tried to replicate exposed muscle tissue on his cranium, google images to the rescue there. I overpainted a Khorne transfer onto his shoulder,a  bit sloppily, but looks fine at a distance. After he was gloss varnished and sprayed with a matte coat I went back and applied some gloss to his head. Hopefully giving him a wet membrane look.

So that's the end of my Chaos Renegade warband creation. Now all I need to do to get these guys prepped is to write up their stats onto a cheat sheet and they'll be ready to rock.

Hope this series of posts has been worth it for you guys. I've had fun making them and I'm proud to have them in my collection.

Bye bye :)

RoC Warband: Squats

Ok, I'm getting to the pointy end with my RoC warband project. In previous posts I covered the Champion, Traitor Marine and lvl 0 Psyker creation process. For my next roll on the retinue table I came up with 7 mutated squats. Read on if you'd like to know more.

Dominant attribute: Manic Fighters
Equipment: Mesh armour, lasguns, bolt pistols
Heavy weapon: Heavy Webber with targeter & suspensor

I chose not to modify these guys at all, deciding to let Khornefication come about purely from the paint job alone.

I'm pretty happy with how this squad turned out. I overpainted a few transfers, which I think makes a big difference to the finished product. Also tried a few different visor techniques. They were a little tricky, not 100% satisfied with them, but I couldn't find a decent tutorial for them so I just had to wing it. I think they look ok.

Never painted squats before either, so that was a first.

Next up will be the lvl 2 Psyker. The last member of the warband. BOYL is not far away too so I better get a move on.

Cheers :)

RoC warband: Psyker lvl 0

Hi all,

On my two previous posts I covered the conversions of my champion and traitor squad. Next up on the RoC warband build is my Psyker. I rolled him up as being level 1, which sounds ok, but because he's a worshiper of Khorne he immediately loses his max level. Consequently, he's now probably only good at card tricks.

Name: Clayton
Psyker lvl 0
Personal attribute: Regeneration
Equipment: Mesh armour, flamer, power sword, energy scanner, crack grenades.

Picking the mini to use as the basis for this conversion was a little tricky. I wanted him to look like a has-been, sort of a washed out professional, but not completely useless....still able to convince passers by that he had magic at his finger tips. Sounds pretty vague I know, but it made sense in my head.

I had a look through my mini cabinet and found a poorly painted old Blacksmith. He looked the part, big apron (could pass for mesh armour), old man who's been around (was a psyker along time ago) and strong (regeneration)....win!

The name? Well, being an Australian, the choice was a fairly obvious one really.

After I stripped him I cut the lantern & hammer from his hands and carved his period trapping away. Then it was just a simple case of adding his new equipment and puttying him up a bit to finish him off. A fairly straight forward conversion and I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.

So all that was left to do was slap some paint on him.

So for this guy I decided to give him some gnarly skin. I like how it turned out. I also gave him a World Eaters tattoo on his shoulder, which was a little tricky to do. The lightning sword was another story all together. I tried about four or five different ways, looked at a few tutorials, but in the end it end up looking a bit meh. I've scratched it up as a learning experience that I'll hopefully get better at in the future.

Overall I'm really happy with this guy. The conversions and the skin colour turned this languishing mini into something I'm happy to put on the table.

Next up will be the chaos squat contingent.

Cheers :)

RoC warband: World Eater Traitor Legionnaires

Hello and let's start,

On my previous post you saw the champion that I created. Next on the list are the 6 World Eater Traitor Legionnaires, Assault squad that I rolled up.

Sergeant profile:
Personal attribute: Spits Acid BS S3 attack
Equipment: Power armour, Chainsword, 2 x Bolt pistol, crack & frag grenades, Bio scanner

Grunt profile:
Dominant attribute: Fangs +1A H2H
Basic equipment: Power armour, Chainsword, Crack & Frag grenades, Bolt pistol.
Standard equipment: 2 with extra Bolt pistol, 1 with Hand flamer, 1 with Plasma pistol, 1 with Autocannon.

All suffer/benefit from Frenzy when enemy within 12".

I wanted these guys to look as ragtag as possible. My reasoning being that Chaos Marines would not have access to new gear, they'd have to salvage what they could from their victims and make do with what they had. To that end I raided my bits box and created them from many different sources.  I could list all the parts I used to make them, but I won't because I can't be arsed.

One thing I wanted to try to do to a few of them was to make their armour look like the old Chaos Renegades armour used to. You know, with the recessed ribs and piping like in the pic below:

To this end, with my rudimentary sculpting skills, I thought I'd try and cheat a little. So I bought a length of Ultra ATA IDE ribbon cable, cut it into small sections and stuck these to the legs.

Then I tried sculpting over the top of it. You can see the results of my toil below:

My skills are pretty ordinary when it comes to sculpting and this was much more than I had ever attempted in the past. There's plenty of gaps, poorly blended areas and mismatched proportions. In my estimation they look great viewed at arms length on the tabletop. Any closer and you'll say "oh!" when you see all the flaws. Saying that though, I did have a lot of fun making them.

Fats forward a month or so and I came to my senses, they looked terrible. Well, two of them did anyway. So I cut them off and had a rummage around and found two likely candidates.

The offending legs.
Space Crusade CSM's.

I cut one standard mini and the sergeant in half and transplanted their legs onto the now legless subjects.

Now the next issue was paint. How was I going to make them look like a coherent unit with all of their varied appearances? I just decided to cross my fingers and hope that the Khorne colour trifecta would tie them all together. Here's hoping.

So that's how they ended up. What do you think?

Next post will be the lvl 0 Psyker

RoC on fellas!

RoC Warband Champion.

Hello all,

In the previous post I blogged about the objective marker that I had made for this years RoC game at BOYL. In this post, and the one's that will follow over the coming months, I will be blogging about each retinue member/unit that I'm making to play said game. Almost all of the minis will be converted to a lesser or greater extent. So I thought it might be fun to document the project, one retinue roll at a time. Let's begin........

First I generated my champion and then gave him four rolls on the retinue table. The chaos patron I chose for my warband was Khorne because blood, guts, bone and gristle are disgusting. Here's the basic warband that I rolled up:

1 x Champion, Beastmen Minor Hero.
1 x Psyker lvl 0
1 x Psyker lvl 2
7 x Squats
6 x World Eater traitor legionnaires, assault.

And here is the champion in detail:

Renegade Leader: Johnny Darvo
Beastman minor hero
Mark: Chaos armour
Rewards: Pseudo Daemonhood (flyer 1M, +1A,+F5), Short legs(1/2M), Silly walk(-1M, -1F).
Fear pts total: 4
Equipment: knife, lasgun, plasma pistol, flak armour, communicator, eye protectors, rad counter.

Due to some abysmal rolling on my part he can only fly at 1" and walk at 1". Therefore I figured that his followers must have taken pity on him in the past and procured some sort of basic mode of locomotion for him. To that end I decided to make a tracked vehicle with the basic movement rate of a human for him to ride on. He'll at least be able to engage the enemy in hand-to-hand, instead of just hurling insults at them from a distance.

His name is a mashing of two on-screen references. The first is from the movie Short Circuit and the second is from Dr Who. They were both chosen after he was built. The reasons will become obvious later on, trust me.

The mini I chose for the basis of my champion was a late edition GW Bloodletter.....3rd iteration I think. The vehicle is a tracked wheelchair from Ramshackle Games.

I began by butchering the donor mini to match his new physique, cutting down his legs to shorten them as much as possible. Pretty fiddly, but worked out in the end. I then cut the hands away from the axe and placed a plasma pistol in one (drilling out the barrel because Chris) and in the other hand I took the pommel from the axe and inverted it's position so that it was on top of his hand. This was to give the appearance of a control stick used to operate the wheelchair.

I carved a chunk of resin away from the top of the tracked vehicle to become the seating area for Johnny and then used a seat section from an old plastic Eldar bike, I think, to make the padding. Once I was happy with the positioning I pinned & glued the sucker in place.

His communicator/rad counter was combined into one unit. I thought a mahoosive boombox (a part from a Ramshackle bike) on the side of his head would be a fitting piece of equipment for a worshiper of Khorne, blasting commands at his minions at full volume! I used a bit from a mechwarrior toy to act as the mounting arm for it as well.

His wings were some old school Reaper wings donated to me by my mate Chris....the other one.....no, not you.....the OTHER one! Thanks a lot for them "Chris" :)

His lasgun was stowed in a cut down plastic straw, mounted on the side of the wheelchair with bent up paper clips. The combat blade was from the RTB-01 SM weapon sprue. I mounted that on the opposite side to the lasgun in a cut up and folded piece of cardboard. The eye protectors were just made with a bit of putty......nothin too flash.

All that was left for me to do was add a few other details like cables and pipes, then a bit of putty work here and there and he was ready for paint. I was remiss in taking a photo before I started to paint him. All I have is this silly little video clip that I'd shared with my mates though, so this will have to suffice:

My son pointed out to me after I had built him that he looked a lot like a rock star because he has a boombox, something that looks like a microphone beside his head, holding what appears to be a microphone in his hands and yelling at the top of his lungs......all well spotted! I actually quite like that image, rocking in the realms of chaos :D

And here he is post paint:

So, what do you think, did I capture what I rolled up? Does he look ridiculous? Would you run from this creature if you came across him or would you stop, point in his direction and laugh? If you answered yes or no to all of these questions then you have failed basic logic because one of those questions was double barreled :P

Anyway, I'm really happy with him, hope you guys like him too :)

Next up will be the Traitor Legionnaires squad.

Cheerio.
