Broo with blaster's.

Also known as Phagon's or Rogue Trader Beastmen.

I bought these guys about five or six years ago, when I first stumbled upon their continued existence at EM4. I had long thought that they had been lost after Metal Magic closed up shop. It's a great shame that Metal Magic didn't market themselves well enough back in the day, because they really did make some fine minis. I only every saw their stuff in a calendar I picked up back in the early 90's.

So, once I had them in my grubby little paws I quickly cleaned them up, based & base coated them.....and then promptly left them in that state for half a decade :(

It's only been over the past year or so that I've come across other people's painted examples, which had the effect of giving me a well deserved kick up the bumb to get mine finished.

So, here's a group shot to kick off this here pictorial feast. Enjoy!

I alternated between grey & light brown for their fur.

Yes, I know, their a bit glowy aren't they.

Not the stealthiest of soldiers in the dark.

Must remember to ease back a little on the airbrush trigger when attempting OSL.

Not sure if the rusted metal on the base looks convincing enough? Still looks a bit like sprue off cuts to me.

Here's a few of them that I think turned out ok,

Like I already mentioned, their a bit glowy, too much in my opinion! But once I'd hit them with the airbrush I couldn't go back. I blame the tools.

I opted for a standard metal armour paint scheme on these guys. I don't think it would have been a good idea to introduce another colour to them alongside the bright blue blaster's :)

Well, more grist for the mill, ala troops for the tabletop done. I did a quick calculating the other day, after looking at my mini horde. I figured if I painted one mini a week it will take me about four to five years to get them all done. What a sobering thought!

I'll be taking these guys back with me to Australia at the end of the month, so they'll be getting some tabletop action soonish. Stay tuned.

Oh, and I'm well aware of that statement I made in my previous post, about never batch painting again. Lesson learned, never make promises in writing.....especially on the net!!!

Progress chums, progress!!!!!

I've completed the conversion work on my Space Pirate, here tis;

Two copper feed hose's added to the flamer.

Fuel tank taken from a "Secrets of the third Reich" mini.

You can just make out the shoulder strap in this pic.

This pic is just to show the hoses a bit more.

So, what did I do?

I made a shoulder strap & belt (to make it look like the tank was strapped to his back) out of thick sticky tape, cut thin & glued down with super glue.

Used the fuel tank from the mini I took the flamer arm from for my Space Ork conversion late last year. The most useful donor mini I've had so far....even if the mini on its own sucks!

Made a couple of hoses from copper wire and ran them from both sides of the tank to the flamer, trying to make them gather around his legs & feet a bit.

You might have also noticed that there's a bit of a gap between the hoses & the base? This was done deliberately, once the basing material has been added the gap will be filled, making the hoses look like their resting on the ground.

So, his finished now, as far as converting goes. Now for the paint.

Time for a lie down & an afternoon nap.

Amputation is a severely underrated pastime.

I thought I'd do a post about my entry for the "Oldhammer Legacy Crew". For those of you who might not know what the hell I'm talking about I suggest you go on over to the forum & have a look.....sorry, I can't be arsed providing the link. You'll just have to use your Google-fu to find out.

Here's my progress to date,

Originally I was going to do some sort of space ork, but then I thought "nah, stuff that, I'm sick of the green skins atm". So I had a dig through my lead pile & found this GW harpy. He's not the best posed mini I've ever come across, but I thought that he showed some potential.

Looks like he's playing catch instead of posturing for a fight in this pose!

I really enjoyed cutting his arm off. 

Basic posed fixed! No argument will be entered into on this point!!!!

Hole in his back will be turned into a large puss filled pimple......or something?

Drilling out the barrel on a minis weapon adds that special "kick arse" look to it.

Parts used for this conversion so far are:

SM shoulder pad

IG flamer

Broken Lego robot arm for the top weapon handle

Plastic thingy used for rear stock handle

I'll try and get the conversion part of the build finished off this week....famous last words huh?

That's what's been keeping me away from blogging, seriously! Those damn grapes have been a thorn in my side (or pain in the arse... take your pick) for years now, but with the wonders of modern medicine I no longer feel the need to blah blah blah......

No dear followers, don't be alarmed, tis not another one of those dreaded "I'm about to cark it" posts you sometimes come across on the blogosphere. I've just ran out of hobby mojo, plain & simple. I blame batch painting, never again will I attempt such madness. From now on I'll only be painting up a couple of minis at a time. I'll try to anyway :p


So, enough whining from me, I thought I'd show you the few orks that I've been able to finish. It's only four, but their all the same god awful mono pose jobs :(

All that's left to do on them is some weathering of the bases & varnish.

I tried some body paint/woad on a couple of their arms.

Yes, you guessed right, he does have a shoulder pad! Good on you.

And just so they'll never miss their next committee meeting, they all have a time piece strapped to their wrists.

Next up, I thought you might be interested in seeing a couple of conversion's I did a few years back. If your not, then I apologise.....half heartedly.

The head was mangled on this dude when I got him, so I mangled him a bit more and came up with this.

I'm really looking forward to getting this guy done, soon my pretty, soon!

So, the plan is to slowly chip away at the ork horde until it's done, then finish off the Hovertank, then complete the other unpublished project, then.....who knows?

All I've done to the Hovertank so far is applied the base coat, copious amounts of an ink wash & drybrushed it. I'm pretty happy with how it's coming along.

So there you have it folks, more mini mayhem. I'm getting pretty bored with the tank to tell you the truth, but I'll battle on & finish it, coz I know/think it'll look great in the end.....it bloody well better!!!

I'm a little annoyed about the skin tone on the orks, I didn't stop to consider how I painted the last batch. I undecorated them white, whereas I undercoated these guys dark grey & drybrushed them white. They've turned out a little too green, a tad too glowing for my tastes. It might be ok once I've got all the other colours on? I want them to fit in with the original group I did a few months back that's all.

Ork conversion bonanza!

Here it is, what you've all been waiting for.....sort of, not really. But it's worth it yeah? You can let me know if it was in the comments section :)

Now, on with the show;

I've got about 40 odd orks to paint up within 4 months time, and a Hovertank too....and another project that I'll reveal when it's done. Regardless, I have a fair bit of work ahead of me, but there's nothing quite like a dead line to motivate you is there? :)

Now, even though I like the old RT sculpts, I can get a little bored of some lines.....specifically the orks. There were far too many mono pose, recycled minis in that range. So, when I was gathering all my greenskin's together -for basing & painting- I became a little disheartened at the prospect of applying brush to so many similar minis. Here's where conversion stepped in to saved the day!



The first in the batch to get the amputation treatment was a red era ork. He was already missing a weapon, but I didn't want to replace it with another, so I cut his whole arm off. I cut his silly little spike off his helmet too.

Red era, boo, hiss! "Get back ye devil!"

Ahh, that makes me feel a little better.

Ran some cables along his arm to bulk out his shoulder joint.

The next one was an old RT standard bearer, but the collection of space marine helmets had already been removed. Good riddance I say! I don't like what GW tried to do with 40k in this respect i.e. transferring command sections from WFB into a futuristic setting. Makes no militaristic sense at all.

So, I cut his arm off! Beginning to see a tend here, when in doubt, just cut the damn thing off! I replaced it with a space marine power first, sort of like he removed it from a dead marine & liked the fit.

Who needs a standard bearer when we've got walkie talkies?

Makes me look tough yeah?

Don't worry about the damage, probably doesn't work, but hey, who cares!

This last conversion was something that only occurred to me a couple of months ago yet it's been starring me in the face for over 25 years. You may be wondering why there is a"run of the mill" space ork raider pictured below. Let me explain;

There's about a gazillion of these type of orks contained within the RBT02 Space Ork Raider's box set. Four Variations on the same mini, yawn!

Cool mini, but overproduced IMO.

So, I was looking at these guys pondering how I could go about sexing them up. Making them interesting enough so that I wouldn't fall asleep at my painting desk. I started to flick through my old trusty tome for inspiration. And then it hit me, looking closely at one part of Dave Andrews groovy diorama.

It doesn't get any better than this, period.

The ork in the bottom left -the one lighting up the trooper & the dreadnought- is using a flamer. But these sculpts never came out with them. So, Dave Andrews (being a clever chap) grabbed a barrel & canister off of an RBT01 marine and bunged them on. The barrel conversion is easy, but the canister/magazine swap is not. The magazine is part of the hand, leg & arm. Removing it to for the canister would have been a pain. So how did he overcame the problem? He  stuck it on the side, behind the original magazine (highlighted it to make it more prominent) & left it there to act as a handle, painting it matt black to hide it. You may be thinking "Is this guy for real? How could you not notice that?", but it honestly didn't register.

Now, when I originally noticed this conversion I didn't look too closely at the details. I just thought to myself "yeah, that looks great, I can do that!". It wasn't until I cut the magazine off that I realised how he did it. But I'm a stubborn person sometimes, so I didn't give up. I resolved to triumph where Dave Andrews acquiesced :)

So, after stuffing it up with my "remarkable" GS skills I decided to ask for some help sourcing a suitable hand. Asslessman on the Oldhammer forum came to my rescue, kindly sending me one of his hands...for free!!! Muchos Gracias JB :)
