RoC warband: World Eater Traitor Legionnaires

Hello and let's start,

On my previous post you saw the champion that I created. Next on the list are the 6 World Eater Traitor Legionnaires, Assault squad that I rolled up.

Sergeant profile:
Personal attribute: Spits Acid BS S3 attack
Equipment: Power armour, Chainsword, 2 x Bolt pistol, crack & frag grenades, Bio scanner

Grunt profile:
Dominant attribute: Fangs +1A H2H
Basic equipment: Power armour, Chainsword, Crack & Frag grenades, Bolt pistol.
Standard equipment: 2 with extra Bolt pistol, 1 with Hand flamer, 1 with Plasma pistol, 1 with Autocannon.

All suffer/benefit from Frenzy when enemy within 12".

I wanted these guys to look as ragtag as possible. My reasoning being that Chaos Marines would not have access to new gear, they'd have to salvage what they could from their victims and make do with what they had. To that end I raided my bits box and created them from many different sources.  I could list all the parts I used to make them, but I won't because I can't be arsed.

One thing I wanted to try to do to a few of them was to make their armour look like the old Chaos Renegades armour used to. You know, with the recessed ribs and piping like in the pic below:

To this end, with my rudimentary sculpting skills, I thought I'd try and cheat a little. So I bought a length of Ultra ATA IDE ribbon cable, cut it into small sections and stuck these to the legs.

Then I tried sculpting over the top of it. You can see the results of my toil below:

My skills are pretty ordinary when it comes to sculpting and this was much more than I had ever attempted in the past. There's plenty of gaps, poorly blended areas and mismatched proportions. In my estimation they look great viewed at arms length on the tabletop. Any closer and you'll say "oh!" when you see all the flaws. Saying that though, I did have a lot of fun making them.

Fats forward a month or so and I came to my senses, they looked terrible. Well, two of them did anyway. So I cut them off and had a rummage around and found two likely candidates.

The offending legs.
Space Crusade CSM's.

I cut one standard mini and the sergeant in half and transplanted their legs onto the now legless subjects.

Now the next issue was paint. How was I going to make them look like a coherent unit with all of their varied appearances? I just decided to cross my fingers and hope that the Khorne colour trifecta would tie them all together. Here's hoping.

So that's how they ended up. What do you think?

Next post will be the lvl 0 Psyker

RoC on fellas!

  1. Nice work - I especially like the bare-headed craze-a-nought with the chainsword... surely there's a better word than "chainsword" that captures the size of that thing! What's with the stats? Looking at them and the Chaos reference I instantly thought of the Warband game. What are you playing?

    1. Hi Dutch,

If you click the link to the previous champion post you'll find out more about what I'm doing. Essentially, I'm creating a warband to play a game of Realm of Chaos with some mates in a few months time. I'm blogging about the process of creating each retinue.

Glad you like my creations :)

The leg swap was a hard choice but a good one tbh, my favourite guy has got to be the conehead.

    1. Dream on baby, your space cows are gunna be the ones going down!

I'm glad I made the choice to change the legs out before I continued on. I know that I would've regretted painting them up otherwise.

Mr Conehead turned out alright didn't he.

      Cheers JB :)

  3. You use the paint pots I remember from my primary school! I’m not sure what that means 🤔 The Zerkers have painted up really well and the ribbing was genius - great thinking!

    1. Well, you see those paint pots, I shamelessly stole them from my sons paint set when he was a toddler. They're a little worse for wear nowadays though, sun damage and all that.

I haven't given up on the ribbing idea yet. I just need a bit more practice.

Glad you like them Ragsta :)

  4. Good work! You've definitely captured the very varied, chaos-berserker look of old Realm of Chaos stuff here. The painting of the red is really nice too.

I tried to make them as nonuniform to reach other as possible, but still look like they belonged with each other.....if that makes sense.

I'm pretty happy with how the red turned out too mate. Blood for the blood god and all that.

  6. Really stunning unit! I love the guy with the pointed helmet and glowing eyes - he oozes menace! The blue-bodied one with his close-fitting greaves is great too - he really has customised his armour. These are great!

    1. Thanks Jon. I'm pretty you with how eclectic they all ended up looking like. I'm glad you like them, means a lot :)

  7. What a cool band of badasses. I have to say that the cable idea is ace! I have seen it used as an ammo belt, but never in the way you approached these. I love your out of the box way of thinking!

In the end it didn't work out as well as I'd hoped it would, but that was mostly due to my GS going off and trying to do it on a completed mini. Hopefully future attempts will be more successful.

I haven't given up on the idea, just need to refine it a bit more I think.

  9. Great work, they have turned out well. The computer cable is a great idea. You could have ground the legs down with a Dremel (or hand file) before adding the cables and putty on top perhaps so they didn't end up so fat. Great looking unit though.

    1. My GS had gone off as well, so I couldn't really sculpt them in detail or with sharp edges. They ended up looking like baggy pants a bit didn't they :D
Hopefully the next few iterations will turn out better.

      Cheers Kym :)
