Jes Goodwin MK1 Terminators

A long time ago, 1988 to be exact, GW released a single version of this Terminator sculpt. Which was quickly followed up by two more iterations the following year. I much preferred the first one though, wishing that they'd made more with some variation with the pose. But, they never did, it was just a prototype.

Fast forward 31 years (eek, I'm really bloody old!) and coming to the realisation that GW, and by extension Jes Goodwin, were never going to do that especially for me I decided to give it a crack myself. Here's what I came up with:

I was spurred on to make these and get them ready by Nico. He's going to be brining his awesome custom SH table to BOYL this year. This was the perfect opportunity to get a squad ready for the game, and I thought why not a unique squad while I'm at it?

Anyway, I better get a move on with the rest of the minis I'll be needing for the event.

Cheers :)

  2. They're great, it's fun to see the heads are bigger than the helmets they're meant to fit in but I don't give much of a fuck about it, they look cool so that wins.
    Get your stuff DONE now.

    1. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I was attaching the heads. I contemplated cutting them down so that it would make sense, but then I would have lost a lot of their face details. So I gave up and attached them with some minimal neck trimming.

I think they look cool anyway. Cheers JB :)

  4. I really love these - you've introduced character and movement into a very static model. Can I ask what the process was for removing the original helmets? Did you drill them out? And how on earth did you angle the helmet on the heavy flamer trooper? Really nice paint scheme too!

    1. A couple of cool questions there Jon. For the helmet removal I just used a metal grinding bit in my Dremel. To tilt the head I carefully sliced the face off of one and pivoted it. I didn't bother filling in the cavity I created though, just blacked it out and the jobs a good'n.

I'm chuffed with the posing changes too. Glad you like them Jon :)

  5. Though I'm a huge fan of Jes' work, I was never fond of the MK 1 Termies. But this squad will definetly shine on that great SH table. Old school to the core!

    1. Cheers Skully.

For me, I really love Jes' work. These guys were a massive missed opportunity imho. But personal taste is what it is.

Can't wait for the SH game. Thanks Skully :)

  6. Those are freaking awesome! You really managed to capture the old school psychopathic space marine vibe with those heads and poses.

Those were the craziest heads I could find. I like my Emperor's finest to look like they're completely off their nut.

Let's see how long they last against a horde of space bugs.

  7. These look great. I really like the way you've got so many poses out of the very static original sculpt. Also the painting on the yellow is very good - it's a bloody hard colour to get right, but you've done it!

    1. Because the original pose is in a standing position with the arms straight it wasn't all that difficult to introduce a bit of dynamism into their poses. Lift a shoulder, twist the legs a bit.

The hardest was the one leaning back with his weapon arm outstretched. For that guy I had to cut him in half to be able to rotate his torso. You can't really make it out in the finished model, but it was a necessary step.

The yellow is quite patchy in areas, don't zoom in too much and they look great :D

Glad you like them Toby :)

    2. That sounds like my painting style - don't put your glasses on or get too close, and it'll be fine!
I'm very tempted to go along to BOYL now!

    3. Please come along. It'd be great to get to meet you. I think this will be the last time I make the pilgrimage to Foundry too....not sure if that's much of a draw, but yeah :D

There's a some great minis and unique minis to see there too.

  9. Dammit, that's a hell of a work. I simply can't believe you got those results from the original mini, it's so awesome. I have one of those and I cannot think of any way of converting it. You're my hero!

    1. Aw shucks Suber, you're making me blush :)

Most of the conversions are fairly simple. A slightly rotated shoulder, hip or arm. Most of them that is, the others were more tricky.

I'm pretty sure you could do it too man, you're a gun at converting. Should rename you "The Cable Guy" you're so bloody good at it :)

I'm glad you like them mate, you're my hero too!
