Guvnor Kulo WIP

Kulos' coming along....slowly. This is my first GS sculpting experience and I have to tell you I'm a little daunted. I suppose I should have started with something small, maybe making a finger or a weapon head instead? Bitten off more than I can chew trying to sculpt up this much, but either way, I'm having fun playing with the GS, so even if I fuck it up good I will have learnt something.

Ok, pic's first, talk later:

Initial gut sculpt with old belt buckle reattached.

Head fattening in progress.

Padlock put back on too.

Side on you can see how fat I tried to make him....dead sexy :)

Now the arms;

Ogre Kingdom arm's blue-tacked in place.

I used a modern Ork bolt pistol, but I scraped off the Ork "logo".

I'm planning on molding his shoulders into his body, over his jacket......if that makes any sense ;)

Not sure about the nipples. I might remove them or try & re sculpt them....dunno yet?

I'll be mounting the arms higher at the shoulder.

Here's a couple of Suspensors as well.

Ok, now the talky bit, where should I begin? Let's start with his Gut shall we.

This was done in a few stages. I'd heard that some sculptors wait until each section has fully cured before moving onto the next stage, for fear of running their previous work. And seeing as this was the first time I'd used GS I decided to do the same, but I was surprised at how long it took to cure. It took an age for it to solidify enough so that I could move onto the next bit. I ended up doing one bit a day, so it's taken me almost a week to get it to the stage your seeing it at now.

I'm also trying to include all the equipment Kulo has listed in his description as well. Two of which are Rogue Trader Suspensors, this fatso has two of them on his person to help offset his weight problem. The thing is is that I've never actually seen a picture of one, so I asked the question over on the Oldhammer forum. So after getting some help on there I settled on using some small discs to represent them. After rummaging through my bits box I found a couple of model car instrument dials. I also decided to attach them where most of weight would be..... His gut :)

About the arm's, I bought some Ogre Kingdoms one's to use for Kulo, but when I got hold of them they looked far too chunky. The alternative was to use standard Ork arms, which are way too muscular. I would have had to GS the hell out of'em to fatten them up enough. So, I went back to using the old Ogre arms, but with the forearms reduced in length & the shoulders cut back. They'll still require quite a bit of greenstuffing but I think they'll look better in the end than trying to use the Ork arms...time will tell :)

I'm also thinking of giving him a T-shirt coz his gut looks a little plain, but I'm not sure yet. I suppose it's hard to tell how it's going to look once he's all painted up. The green & metallic surface don't help in giving me a complete picture.

So as it stands I've gotta attach his arms, bulk them out & smooth them onto his body, make a Neuro Disruptor and give him some detailed work.....quite a bit to go.

I'm kinda on the fence with how he's gunna turn out. It's still too hard to tell at this stage for me. What do you guys think of my efforts so far? Worthy? Rubbish? Misguided? I'd be interested to know what you think.

Cheerio :)

  1. Dude, this is looking really cool! The sculpting skills are nothing to be ashamed of mate, and I love that you are sticking to the kit list. Utterly brilliant :-)
I suspect you're right to go for a t-shirt, but it would be cool to see a bit of belly showing, criss-crossed with scars from previous knife fights...

    1. Thanks Balloony,

Great to hear you think my sculpting is ok. It's hard to be your own critic....especially when I'm doing something that I've never tried before.

I'm thinking the same thing with the T-shirt too, ripped off at the bottom so you can see his gut hanging down.

      Cheers buddy :)

  2. I really like the idea and how it's done and the sculpting is really great, you've really fattened up this face in a way that makes sense. It might be going a little too far for my taste honestly and the arms look a bit off for me but it's the balance that counts so I'll wait for the whole thing.
Great work all the same !

    1. Yeah, as I said I'm not convinced yet that it's coming together in a coherent manner, but it's really hard to know which way I should go with this guy. He might end up looking too cartoony for my tastes....dunno. Once he's all put together & base coated I'll be able to make up my mind.

      Cheers Ass :)

    2. Honestly I think some slightly buffed up plastic ork (old ones) arms ould do just fine, like real obese people would have. the muscles on the ogre arms are what could break the already borderline balance.
Hope you don't mind the franchise but you know it's all a matter of taste, nothing right or wrong. ;)

    3. No sweat JB, all constructive criticism is most welcome.

I'm not sure about the Ork arms because his body isn't very wide. Might look a little freaky with normal arms, big gut & narrow waist? I'm gunna try and round the muscle definition on the Ogre arms first. I'll see how it turns out.

In all honesty, I think this minis gunna end up being a compromise between looking good & staying faithful to the description. He's supposed to be super fat, but that's damn hard to sculpt, especially for a noob like me :)

Cheers JB, keep the thoughts coming, much appreciated.

  3. You did some fantastic work on this figure! I don't like the nipples. A T-shirt where you can see his belly would look nice!

    1. The more I look at his nipples the more I'm not liking them either. And if I add the T-shirt I'll have to remove them anyway.

Thanks for your feedback Peter, the more the merrier :)

  4. Man, this is f&%king awesome! Seriously, you are doing a great job there. Everything that could be improved has been said, i.e., the arms need to be less muscular and the nipples are too protruding. Making them smaller, or the t-shirt solution, will make that perfect.
Congrats and go on!! Cheers, dude.

    1. Thanks Suber :)

I'm taking all the advice on this guy seriously. The nipples will be removed & the arms I'll be blending out the muscle definition. With the T-shirt, I'm thinking of using a thin strip of cardboard for the seem along his gut and then blending that into him with GS....not sure yet.

Im also going to do something about his bolt pistol too. It only occurred to me after looking at the photo's of him that the modern pistol is about 2 or 3 times larger than the RT one's. I'm still trying to figure out how I can address this issue, without resorting to buying one off Ebay.

I'm gunna take my time on him, I don't want to make a mini I'm not happy with just so I've got something to game with. He has to look the part.

      Cheers buddy :)

Still have a long way to go, but he's taking shape.

      Cheers.
