YOOOOO SHALL NOT PAAAAASSSSSS!!!!!......Mr Close Assault Dreadnought!!!

The third instalment of four Rogue Trader scenarios that I played earlier this year. This type of game was one that I've wanted to play for a very long time, a Rogue Trader game in a fantasy setting.

The Scenario:

A small Ultramarine force had been tasked with setting up an observation outpost on an uncharted planet. An Ork Warlord is suspected of using it as a base of operations to launch raids on passing Imperial trade ships.

The planet was thought to be uninhabited (apart from the Greenskins), but not long after they had finished setting up their camp they discovered the remains of earthen dwellings, a disused mine shaft and other such evidence of human occupation.

A few days later (while out on patrol) they came across a small party of Ork's, sleeping in the open. They had a rather run down Walker (AT-ST) with them, but they were completely unprepared for the Marines. In a brief encounter the Ork's were slain & the Walker left as a smouldering wreck.

The Marine's returned to their makeshift camp to file a report of their engagement. Unaware that the noise of the battle had not only been been heard by the local populace, but that they were now on their way to the scene to investigate the cause of the disturbance.

Ultramarines: Pushed around by Rob_s

1 x 5 man squad with a flamer
1 x 5 man squad with a rocket launcher
1 x Close Assault Dreadnought (Chuck)

Locals: Pushed around by me

17 x humans in chain with hand weapons
3 x dwarves with hand weapons
1 x lvl 5 hero in plate armour with hand weapon
1 x lvl 25 wizard (Groondolf)

And so it begins:

The Local's find the battlefield remains and search through it....bemused at what they discover. Meanwhile, the
Marines kick back and stare at the grass.

"Realistic" foot print effects lead off to the centre of the grass mat. What could have created such things?

Groondolf cast "Ectoplasmic mist" near the Marine's to shield his followers advance. Like he
somehow knew that they had guns & and that his best chance of success was to close
with them ASAP :)

1st squad moved forward from their base and set up a shooting gallery on top of the nearest hill. Killing the three
dwarves, even before they had a chance to scowl at them.

2nd squad now moved to the centre as well. Their superior armour & armaments making them nigh invulnerable to the
natives feeble weaponry. The Locals split into two groups. Groondolf and a small bunch of followers moved to engage
with the enemy head on, while.....

.....the other larger force moved to the left, trying to outflank the enemy using the Ectoplasmic mist as cover.

Rocket man proved to be pretty ineffectual during the game. Only killing a couple of  Local's.

Round & round the Mulberry bush.

I rolled appallingly for most of the game, hence the locals got churned up pretty good....for the first half anyway.

"Steal mind" made Chuck amble away from the combat for a few rounds. Giving me a
much needed respite from his menace.

Using up a few more of my magic points I cast Ectoplasmic mist again, enveloping the Marines in the centre. It enabled
my followers to engage with them in hand to hand combat without getting gunned down on their approach.

The end result? I had lost half of my force, but he Marine's routed from their losses.

I used the last of my magic points to cast "Temporal distort" to give my guys a second
move. Allowing them to close with the last remaining Marine....annoying rocket dude!

Meanwhile, Chuck had regained his faculties & rather quickly set about driving Groondolfs' head down on through
his spinal column.

The Local's ended rocket man.

And then Chuck ended them all rather horribly in return :(

Conclusion:

Even though I had rolled quite horribly for most of the game, we both agreed afterwards that chain/plate armour is not a fair match for a bolter. I think to play these sorts of games you need a lot of terrain and/or cover, just to give the normal populace a chance. Either that or have a shit tonne of them in reserve? Actually that might be fun :D

We had a great time playing this type of game. I think it warrants some further investigation.

Ramble:

I remember hearing about these types of games that were written about in Warhammer Siege when I was a teen. I wondered how you'd actually go about playing an equitable game (one side with guns vs the other with crossbows) without it turning into a turkey shoot. My gaming buddies & I never gave it a go, too much for our teenage brains to even contemplate attempting.

Then about five years ago I got hold of a copy of Siege and read through the whole book, for the first time! I was blown away with the & quality of the artwork, the detailed dioramas, the descriptions and just the sheer quantity of untapped possibilities, ripe for the picking. In my opinion it's up there with RT & 3rd ed Fantasy....I reckon it's that good.

In amongst all of the evocative illustrations, dioramas and complex (but awesomely detailed) siege rules, there's some random scenario generation charts. And more specifically, there's a chart solely devoted to playing mixed scenarios, pitting Fantasy against RT peoples/species.

Disappointingly though, I never got to see anyone playing it....over my entire gaming life (some 28 years worth). I never had the opportunity to witness or read about a mixed world game being played. No friendly face offs, no gaming convention display games, not even a WD batrep.....nothing! Which is a real shame, coz I think that if it was given the right amount of support I think it could have grown legs. Maybe even spawned a whole new direction for GW to take the RT world in? Who knows.....maybe it was just a fun little side project for Rick Priestley?

I have a couple of other theories (possibly more plausible than my previous supposition) as to why it may have not taken off as well; Most gamers (or more specifically GW gamers from that time period) usually only collected one type of miniature, either Fantasy or 40K. And you sort of involuntarily locked yourself into that gaming mindset....never thinking about them ever coexisting. Also, there was really no reason or opportunity to play alongside each other either. Be it in a tournament setting at each others homes. And lastly, when my friends & I got into wargaming we really only ever had the time and/or money to collect (and occasionally paint) one genre of miniatures. So we just played in one setting....all the time.

I'll definitely be exploring more of this style of game.

Cheers all :)

Ruglund's ladz go for a stroll with their dog.....and blast some stuff too.

The second semi linked game with the Ork's that I played. Once again, my buddy came up the scenario & my son and I played the two opposing protagonist's.

So, without further delay, here's the write up;

Silver Skull Squad Alpha Pappa (pushed around by my son).

Your Squad has been sent to requisition fuel supplies (fuel canisters represented by six white tokens) from the Hazelburg B refinery and return it to the Governor's palace. You have been told that they are critical to the ongoing war effort, though you suspect it will be used to fuel the Governor's personal escape shuttle. Either way you've been given your orders and you'll carry them out.

You must keep them out of Ork hands, either by holding the refinery or by moving them far enough away from the facility (off table) that the Orks will give up their pursuit.

You have a transport you can use to carry the canisters away, affectionately named "the beast". But it's terribly run down, the weapon systems no longer function & the Grav systems are on the verge of breaking down. If you try to push it too hard it could stop functioning all together, so take it easy....you've been warned.

Also, there's a rumour at the refinery that there's some sort of creature living nearby in a toxic lake (off the northern table edge). Making excessive noise in the general area could disturb the creature.

Retinue;
4 x Silver skulls with boltgun's
4 x Beastmen with lasgun's & their horns.
1 x Transport (The Beast)

Ruglud's Ladz (pushed around by me)

Youz invadin da humies turf. Dis is da first step, a speed bump on da way to da big battle where all da ladz from all da ova clans will join up an smash everfing real good. I'll be bringin me dog wiv me too (FIDO), nuffin can stop us wiv him helpin.

Dis place has got da juice the humies need for their machines, wiv out it their stuffed. Take as much of it as you can. Maybe you can nick da humies ride as well?

Retinue,
Ruglud - Ork Nob with a powerfist
Ferocious Indigenous Death Organism (FIDO) - Psychic hound
15 x Ork Boyz with bolters.

LET THE CULTURAL EXCHANGE BEGIN:

First turn saw Fido & Ruglad's ladz hurry across the bridge towards the nearby hill. The Space marines & Co. loaded up the
transport and immediately gunned the engine into overdrive.

Turn two saw FIDO run up onto the crest of the hill (for a better view) and attempt to blast the Beastmen operator
of the transport with Mental Blitz.....but failed.

Realistic "Mental Blitz" effects :)

The Marines & Co. then opened up on FIDO and ended his very short battle field career. Ruglad's ladz
shot at the transport and damaged it slightly, slowing it down. This commotion was enough to
stir the "Swamp Dragon" from his slumber.

As soon as it appeared on the roadside the Beastman operator attempted to ram it, but failed.
So the "Swamp Dragon" jumped onto the transport and ate the offending creature.

Turn three saw the transport halted from more bolter fire. The Swamp Dragon leapt down from the wreck and engage
with the orks. A Marine & Beastman were gunned down out the front of their shack. The rest made a hasty retreat.

Turn four saw the remaining Space Marine force wiped out and the Swamp Dragon sliced & diced by Ruglud.

In conclusion,

The bad:

It would have been great for FIDO to have more of a go in the game, but I was determined to try and stop the transport early on. Ending up in his early demise :(

The Space Marine's forces were completely overwhelmed by the orks. Maybe a few more could have helped, but the Swamp Beast was intended to tip the balance in their favour. Obviously it didn't turn out that way.

I'm quickly learning that I need to brush up on my photographic skill's while gaming. I think it requires some extra thought as to how each photo will tell a story. Taking more photo's, from different angles, each turn should be sufficient. Hopefully it'll make the process of batreping a bit easier too. As I feel there's quite a few "gaps" in this story even though it was a very short game on a small gaming area. Photographically, there's a few connections between the action that don't seem logical. Anyway, practice makes perfect right? Either that or repeated mistakes :D

The Good:

Having a dog with mental powers was a fun idea, it's a concept that I'll try to incorporate into future games.

The transport was a laugh, it started out with a max speed of 6 inches, but if driven at this speed then there was a good chance it could damage itself....which it did on the first turn. It's movement was slowed to an even slower rate of 4 inches. It then took damage from bolter fire, which made my son gun the engine at full speed again, slowing it further to a crawl. When the Swamp Dragon appeared and he tried to ram it with his "ram speed" it just casually stepped aside. After the operator was dispatched it just stopped.

So, that ends game two.

Lastly, I have a little bit of a dilemma that I hoping you guys might be able to help me with.  I forgot to take photos for one of the games that I played while I was at home. I've got all the action written down, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how I could go about doing a batrep for it without pictures. I can't recreate it either, as I don't have enough terrain to properly replicate it.

Could you recommend an App that I could use to draw the battlefield? Or is there some other way of doing a batrep?  Oh, and I forgot to mention that I don't have a PC, I do all my stuff on my trusty (sometimes infuriating) tablet.

Cheers guys :)

A sorting out of cultural differences.....Rogue Trader style.

I played a total of four games while I was back in Aus for the past two months......not ideal, but I'll take what I can get (gaming wise & anything else really) anytime. So here is the first of the batreps.

The first scenario was thought up by my gaming buddy Rob_s, but unlike all the other previous battles we have had against each other, batrep duty has now been passed onto me. For the game, GM'ing responsibilities were Rob_s' domain. My son & I got to play as the protagonist's.

The scenario:

The setting was a place called Radtown, in and around an old mining facility. It consisted of a few shacks either side of a narrow road that lead off into nowhere. The opposite side of the camp backed onto a shore line. The water wasn't drinkable, but the lake did provide a good transport route for mining barges to deliver & pick up goods from. The rest of the area was sparsely populated with trees & a few hills.

It was a poor mining outpost that had long ago been abandoned by the Squat mining guild. It's resources plundered, the Squat's had moved onto other more lucrative sectors on the planet. Fast forward three lunar cycles & other life forms had decided to move in to claim what little remained. These interested parties consisted of two rival gangs.

The first was (played by my son) a Beastmen herd, led by a formidable Broo, who went by the name of Ram Man (oh well, they don't have a low Intelligence score for nothing). He & a group of eight other Beastmen had heard about an ammo cache in one of the sheds in the mining camp. They aimed to get there first so that they could gore as well as blast their enemies.

The second group was (played by the GM) a Human gang, called the Tunnel Snakes. Led by a dude going by the moniker of King Pliskin, he had eight other bad dudes in his retinue They had seen several goat tracks leading to & from the mining camp a few nights previous. This was not to be tolerated, sheep & humans had long ago been deemed "culturally divergent" on this mining planet (they still farmed their brothers for meat). Sooner or later they would come looking for the humans to extract revenge upon them. The Tunnel snakes thought it better to cull the herd before they themselves were eaten.

So, where did i fit in?

I had been given command of an Ork horde, led by none other than Thrugg Bullneck,. He had two 2IC's to lead the rest of his unruly mob. They were Snappa, who sported a mechanical claw...the Roboclaw 5000 model & Brad, who wore a blue imperial model power fist. These three leaders each lead a squad of five.

They'd had a few stoushes with the humies a few times in the area & they'd heard about Goatmen having fights with them too. The Ork's had had enough of these other element's encroaching into their territory. They'd decided to surprise them, by using some of their stolen merchant barges to make a landing near the edge of the mining camp. They'd teach'em both a lesson they soon wouldn't forget. If they could pull it off, they'd be rid of both gang's for good.

Here be pic's of the rumble in the interplanetary jungle:

So, the end result of this game was all the humies were wiped out, but not before BBQ'ing Thrugg, along with his cohort who had just managed to put him out! The Broo had kicked the hell out of the Ork's most of the game, before they got their act together (rolling high number's helps, so I've heard) and wiped them out too. But the Ork's victory had come at a very high cost, only three remained to plunder the spoils of battle.

I tried to do this batrep a little differently, by using speech bubbles in the pics to describe the action. I'm not sure if it's entirely successful, but it is a damn sight faster than trying to write out all the action blow by blow. I didn't take enough pics during the game & we should have removed casualties....so it wouldn't have looked so cluttered in some of the final shots, but overall I'm ok with the end result. After all, Tis my first batrep :)

Cheers & all that other mooshy stuff :)

Nostalgia trip...well, for me it is anyway :)

I've been back home for about a month now, and I decided to have a bit of a rummage through my old garage to see what I could find. I happened across three of my old high school folders that I used to enjoy pimping with fantasy pictures.

For those who can remember, a while back l posted about how I regretted cutting up a lot of my old gaming magazines back in the day. The harvested images were destined for use in these folders. Anyway, have a gander at what my teenage "talent" was capable of at that time & make up your own mind if it was a great idea to hack these magazines to bits or youthful stupidity?

Spread eagle, for your viewing pleasure.

Blue headed dude, ROC & a bright red T-Rex ....ace!

Mmmm, Tuff arse termie, about to become a tasty snack. I
never played Toon, but TMNT was a fun RP game.

I've said it before & I'll say it again, Dave Andrews oldschool
 diorama's kick arse!

Inside the mighty folder, where you can see when I first started getting interested
in the opposite sex. Which, as was expected, wasn't reciprocated :(

Can't even remember this tarts name. She was some TV/singer
"wanna be" that fizzled out. Still, she had it were out mattered
 most :D

TMNT was one of the first four player arcade games. It was
quite a good game too, along with Double Dragon.

Paul Benson dreadnought, ROC dudes & mutant dingoes riding oversized mutant grasshoppers, awesome!

Second one. Punisher & flying Ninja Turtle for the win!

Blocked out my name, coz you know, I'm a secret agent.

As you can tell I was on a TMNT kick for a couple of years.
Those freehand Eldar dreadnought canopies were really
something too weren't they!

Nobz, TMNT & GD runner ups.

Those Garbage gang stickers were popular for a while there too. If you haven't
heard of'em, they were basically Cabbage patch dolls all fucked up, groovy!

SciFi T-Rex in an RT setting. You can't see it in this pic, but he was
surrounded by eldar.....cool!

Lucky last. Over excited Chaos warrior, flaming Lamborghini &
a very deep, philosophical quote to motivate me during class.

Robotech was (and still is) a favourite anime of mine. First
cartoon I saw that had people actually dying in it!

So much going on in this back cover that I don't even know
where to start.

I used to really enjoy making these when I was a young'n. They helped me cope with some of the more demoralising classes I had to endure during high school.

So, now you know where all my WD's, GM's, C & VG's, 2000 A.D.'s and other fantasy stuff ended up.

I wonder if anyone but myself will be interested in seeing these? Unless it's obviously hobby related, sometimes it's hard to know what to post up & what should best be kept to oneself. Oh well, too late now, I've clicked the publish button.

Good gracious blessings to all you wonderful children of mother earth out there. May you all find comfort & solace in whatever debauchery you find appealing.

Cheers.
